are They Safe?

drugtrust.org

Consumers are forced to draw conclusions regarding cannabis safety from the attractiveness of retail displays rather than facts.

At this moment determining what is safe to consume is up to consumers.  While the States have prescribed legislation relating to cultivation, processing, transportation, sale, and consumption, we do not even have a basic system of information dissemination to any of the market constituents.  Information if it even exists does so in silos that are not connected and may not be decipherable.

All constituents have serious concerns:

Cannabis plants are very susceptible to absorbing harmful chemicals such as heavy metals and pesticides from the soil under certain common conditions.  Being a natural product, no one crop is the same as the other.  When stressed by weather, cannabis plants produce high concentrates of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the substance that gets users high, and CBD (cannabidiol), the substance gaining attention and popularity for its potential health benefits.

Knowing the levels of THC and CBD from a crop of cannabis is important.  When a plant contains 0.3 percent or less THC, the federal government considers it “industrial hemp,” and by Colorado’s and most states’ reckoning, can legally be formulated into oils, tinctures, topicals, and capsules, and widely sold to consumers. But if a plant has THC levels above 0.3 percent, the federal government considers it marijuana, and even states where it is legal sharply limit where the products can be sold.

As of this writing, several states do not require cannabis testing, let alone the dissemination of information to consumers.

Many CBD products sold online and in retail stores today come from hemp, not marijuana. And the source of that hemp, as shown above, can be important.

Most hemp used in CBD products sold in the U.S. today comes from Colorado, Oregon or Kentucky (which passed a law to support hemp growers in 2013), or is imported from overseas. Products made with hemp grown overseas can be even more problematic, because they are not subject to any state or federal testing.

Consumer Safety concerns given lack of cannabis product packaging.

Currently, there is no clear or uniform legislation requiring consumer packaging disclosures for cannabis products.  It’s time to change that.

drugTRUST is in discussions with the state of California to make available its TRUSTseal service.  drugTRUST’s TRUSTseal service will enable consumer packaging to include content and source for all cannabis products.
